How Mould and Damp works
You fill in a short form. We pass it to one damp and mould specialist who works near you. They get in touch, and you decide what happens next.
We don't do the work ourselves. Mould and Damp is a free matching service. The specialist is an independent business, and any agreement is between you and them.
The four steps
You send an enquiry
Postcode first, then a few quick questions about who you are, what's affected and how soon you need help. Add up to three photos if you have them. It takes a couple of minutes.
It goes to one local specialist
We pass your enquiry to one local specialist, usually the same day. Their area includes your postcode. It isn't put on a list or sold to several firms.
They contact you
They'll normally be in touch within one working day, usually by phone. They'll ask about the problem, maybe look at your photos, and arrange a time to see it. Some will charge for a survey visit and some won't; they'll say which.
You decide
They tell you what they think is causing it and what they'd charge to fix it. Take your time. Ask questions, get it in writing, and get another opinion if you want one. You're under no obligation.
What helps the specialist
A few details make the first call quicker and the price more accurate:
- When you first noticed it, and whether it gets worse in winter or after rain.
- Whether it's on an outside wall, near the floor, around a window or on a ceiling.
- Any work done recently: a new bathroom, cavity wall insulation, rendering, a blocked-up fireplace.
- Photos in daylight, one close up and one showing the whole wall.

Questions worth asking any specialist
- What do you think is causing it, and how did you work that out?
- Is the price for finding the cause, fixing the cause, or just treating the mould?
- Is there a guarantee, who backs it, and does it still apply if I sell the house?
- Are you insured for this kind of work, and are you a member of a trade body such as the Property Care Association?
- Can I have the quote in writing, with what's included and what isn't?
Landlords and letting agents
The process is the same, and the form asks how many homes you look after so the specialist knows what to expect. If a tenant has reported damp or mould, say so when they call. Our landlords' page covers what the law expects and why a written record of each step matters.
Common questions
Why only one specialist?
Because most people asking for help with damp don't want five phone calls the same evening. One person who covers your area gets your enquiry and nobody else does. If they can't help, or you'd rather someone else, email us and we'll try another.
Do I pay anything?
No. Sending an enquiry is free. The specialist may charge for a survey or for the work, and they'll tell you before they do anything.
How do you make money?
Specialists may pay us for the enquiries we send them in their area. You never pay us, and the specialist sets their own prices.
Do you check the specialists?
We don't vet, accredit or insure anyone, and we won't pretend otherwise. We pass enquiries to independent firms that cover the area and want the work. Ask them about insurance, guarantees and trade body membership, and get the quote in writing. Our about page explains more.
I'm a tenant. Can I use this?
Repairs to a rented home are your landlord's responsibility, so we don't pass tenants' details to specialists. The tenants' guide explains how to report the problem and where to go if nothing happens.
Which areas do you cover?
We take enquiries from anywhere in England. Our first local pages are for Birmingham, Coventry and Wolverhampton. Outside those, we'll try to find someone near you, but we can't promise there's always a specialist free.
Ask for a local damp and mould specialist
Free to use, no obligation, and your details go to one local specialist, not a list.
We're a matching service, not the firm that does the work. The specialist contacts you, looks at the problem and quotes you directly. Whether you go ahead is up to you.
